TDK INTRODUCES 74-MINUTE CD-R FOR CONSUMER AUDIO RECORDING

PORT WASHINGTON, NY, January 9, 1997 -- TDK today announced the introduction of the CD-RXG74 Recordable Compact Disc, a consumer audio CD-R that offers 74 minutes of high quality digital recording time, comparable to the length of commercially produced audio CDs. The new CD-RXG74 and the currently available 60- minute CD-RXG60 bring an unprecedented level of sonic quality and flexibility to the home recording market.

TDK Vice President of Marketing Tim Sullivan notes: "CD-R is the ultimate high-fidelity medium for the home recordist, especially when dubbing CDs and other digital sources. The increased recording length of the CD-RXG74 now makes it possible for up-and-coming musical groups to record full-length demo CDs using the new generation of more affordably-priced consumer CD-R decks. CD-RXG74 discs are also great for making a copy of a commercial CD for personal use, as well as creating 'mix' music compilation discs, recording live music, and archiving rare and irreplaceable tapes and LPs."

Once recorded using a consumer CD recorder, TDK CD-RXG74 discs may be played back on all existing CD audio players, including home decks, car stereos and personal CD portables, with access to the full range of functions supported by CD players such as random access, scan, skip track, etc. TDK's CD-RXG60 and CD-RXG74 discs are designed for digital audio applications only and cannot be used to record other types of CD formats (CD-ROM, CD-I, CD-G, Photo CD, etc.). A write-once medium, CD-RXG discs are also equipped with the Serial Copy Management System (SCMS) which limits digital copying to one generation.

TDK Technologies For Sonic Excellence

TDK's proprietary technologies ensure that music recorded on CD-RXG discs boasts the same superior audio characteristics and durability that consumers have come to expect from play-only CDs. TDK achieved this remarkable breakthrough in optical media through the use of a high-sensitivity cyanine dye recording material that creates accurate, well-formed recording "pits" on the disc. Additionally, use of a high-precision stamper and advanced injection molding processes contribute to low error rates. And, to ensure maximum durability, TDK also uses a special protective layer that shields the recording layer from heat and moisture.

A pioneer in CD technology, TDK has been actively involved in optical media research and development for more than 15 years. TDK introduced its line of professional/industrial CD-R media in 1991.

TDK CD-RXG74 discs are marketed in accordance with the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992, which mandates a royalty fee to be paid at the manufacturer level for consumer digital recording media. Royalties are distributed to record companies, artists, publishers, songwriters and other music copyright holders. Only consumer CD-R media can be used in home recordable CD players.

TDK CD-RXG74 discs will be available in December 1996 at a suggested retail price of $12.
